E-mail is electronic mail. It is the sending of messages from one user's computer to one or more others.
Most e-mail messages contain simple text. But they can also contain still and moving images, sound, spreadsheets, and other types of data.
E-mail is the most popular use of the Internet. It is useful for communicating with friends and relatives. It has become almost indispensible for communications between and within many businesses and activist groups.
But because E-mail is so useful, it is a frequent tool of Harassers, and a target for sabotage, using a variety of artificially created E-mail Problems.
E-mail Software
E-mail software is what people use to read, write, send, and receive their e-mail. An e-mail software package is sometimes called an "e-mail client".There are many e-mail software packages available. Some of the ones available for Microsoft Windows are:
Microsoft Outlook Express
This is probably what most people use for e-mail. It comes built in to most versions of Microsoft Windows.Eudora
I have been using this for many years, including Eudora Light, and EudoraPro versions 3.0 and 6.2. It originally came with the software package from UltraNet, which was one of my earlier Internet Service Providers.Mozilla Thunderbird
This is an Open Source e-mail software package. One of these days I want to try it.Some ISPs provide a Web interface their e-mail service. In this case a user doesn't need e-mail software. The user can use an ordinary Web Browser to read and write e-mail.
E-mail Problems
Because E-mail is so useful to individuals, businesses, and activist groups, a problem with e-mail can be very unpleasant and costly. So it is not surprising that E-mail Problems are being intentionally created to Harass individuals and groups. This type of Computer Problem can also be used for Internet Censorship, because it disrupts the communications of people that use e-mail in publishing, and convinces some people to not use e-mail at all.
There are many types of E-mail Problems, several of which have happened to me.
For more information about E-mail and its problems, see the following sections:
- E-mail Spam is e-mail for which you did not ask, and which you do not want.
- E-mail Substitution is when somebody tries to send a message, but a completely different one is sent in its place.
- E-mail Duplication is when one message is sent, but 2 or more identical copies of the message are received by its recipients.
- E-mail Blocking is intentionally preventing delivery of e-mail, or delaying delivery until the e-mail's content no longer has value.
- E-mail Hiding is when messages are put in unusual places where they will probably not be seen.
- E-mail Spoofing is when somebody sends an e-mail message, but makes it appear to come from somebody else.
- E-mail Containing Malware is e-mail used to deliver malicious payloads, such as virus and worm programs, to other peoples computers.
- Unsendable E-mail is when you create an e-mail message, but when you try to send it, the e-mail software refuses to send that particular message. One unusual example was my Eudora E-mail Failure 2005/06/10.
- Lost E-mail Passwords is when the e-mail software loses your passwords and requires that you retype them.
- And there some other miscellaneous problems such as and Outlook Express E-mail Problems.
E-mail Substitution
E-mail Substitution is when somebody tries to send a message, but a completely different one is sent in its place. There are many different ways for E-mail Substitution to happen. Some are more evident than others. It might have happened to me mnay times without me knowing it.
But I am certain that it happened to me between 2004/09/26 and 2004/11/08. I am certain because messages that I sent to myself never arrived. Instead I received completely different ones.
The messages that I had sent to myself were copies of messages that I sent to others. After some investigation I discovered that the incorrect messages that I had received were copies of messages that I had sent many months earlier. Somehow those old messages had been substituted for the new messages.
The substitutions happened in groups. The following are details of the first group. The Out folder lists the messages that were supposed to have been sent. The In folder lists the messages that were actually sent and eventually received.
Out folder: Recipient Date/time Sz Subject --------------- ------------------------ -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Kamal Jain 10:28 PM 9/26/2004 -0400 1 Re: MA leads from NH prospecting Sueann 10:43 PM 9/26/2004 -0400 4 Re: Project Media Matrix Web Site update Max Dean Par... 10:46 PM 9/26/2004 -0400 2 RE: PLEASE IGNORE MY PREVIOUS MESSAGE with Subject: Project Med Ted Jackson 10:53 PM 9/26/2004 -0400 4 Re: [mcactivism] Re: Letter from Inventor of EM Technologies In folder: Sender Date/time Sz Subject --------------- ------------------------ -- --------------------------------------------------------------- David W. Roscoe 10:53 PM 9/26/2004 -0400 2 Re: Fw: Fw: Just a thoughtNote that the dates and times on the messages seem to have been preserved. This is what allows the sent and received messages to be related. There were no other messages sent with those dates and times. One message, the 10:43 PM one to "Sueann", was never received, apparently lost.
The other 3 messages were replaced, substituted with 3 others. Some searching and analysis indicated that the 3 received messages were copies of messages that I had sent many months ago.
I resent each replaced message with the following inserted at the beginning of each:
[ I am resending this message because I've been having severe e-mail problems, and I suspect that either the message was not sent, or a months-old message [possibly to somebody else] was sent in its place. If this is a duplicate then I'm sorry. ]The new sent and received messages appeared in my In and Out folders this way:Out folder: Recipient Date/time Sz Subject --------------- ------------------------ -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Kamal Jain 10:56 AM 9/27/2004 -0400 2 Re: MA leads from NH prospecting Sueann 10:57 AM 9/27/2004 -0400 4 Re: Project Media Matrix Web Site update Ted Jackson 10:58 AM 9/27/2004 -0400 4 Re: [mcactivism] Re: Letter from Inventor of EM Technologies Max Dean Par... 10:59 AM 9/27/2004 -0400 2 RE: PLEASE IGNORE MY PREVIOUS MESSAGE with Subject: Project Med In folder: Sender Date/time Sz Subject --------------- ------------------------ -- --------------------------------------------------------------- David W. Roscoe 10:59 AM 9/27/2004 -0400 3 RE: PLEASE IGNORE MY PREVIOUS MESSAGE with Subject: ProjectThis is the way that the message lists are supposed to appear. Note that the message Subjects are preserved, because this time there were no Message Substitutions.A few more groups of Message Substitutions happened in the coming weeks, but I never discovered a cause. It happened the last time on 2004/11/08. The problem had disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared.
E-mail Spam
[This section was previously titled "Unwanted E-mail"]
E-mail Spam is unwanted e-mail. Many people get it, sometimes in large quantities. Most people are led to believe that E-mail Spam is commercial e-mail, a form of advertizing, the electronic equivalent of postal junk mail. Some of it is, but not all of it.
The purpose of some E-mail Spam is not advertizing, but Harassment. Normal E-mail Spam is annoying, but it can be made more annoying by increasing its quantity, controlling its timing, and customizing its content.
How do you know whether spam is harassment? Here are some indicators.
- You receive an unusually large amount of it.
- It arrives in sudden bursts of multiple messages, especially if they have the same subject, especially if they have the same body.
- It is part of an interesting Coincidence with something in your life.
I save all the spam that I receive so that I can analyse it and document suspicious events. The following are spam events that I believe were probably part of a Harassment program.
* EMailSpamEventDx. The following is a list of my suspicous e-mail spam experiences.E-mail Spam Burst Of 62 Identical Messages

*!2003/07/14. Spam has switched from obvious to stealthly. *!The volume of the spam had been gradually increasing. * Until recently most of the spam had been obvious without opening it. Most had the appearanace of commerial e-mail because of: *!The Subject field, which usually mentions a product for sale. *!The From field, which usually contains an e-mail address that appears to be generated randomly. * To to reduce my wasted time, I begun to transfer the obvious spam directly to the Junk folder without opening then. *!After I did this, maybe in response to it, the received spam became difficult to recognize without opening it. Most had the appearanace of person e-mail because of: *!The From field which often had actual names, often both first and last, instead of random looking EMail addresses. *!The Subject field, which often was not about a product for sale. *!Because I solicit e-mail from people that I don't know, I needed to again open messages to recognize the spam.E-mail Spam Amounts Change Wildly

* If one was getting a large amount of legitimate commercial e-mail, one would expect it to be about a variety of types of products. But this is often not the case for me. Though the messages might be different, they are often about similar products, as if they are being coordinated, or they are all coming from only a few senders. *!2003/10/23. * Spammers collect e-mail addresses from various sources, such as Web pages, and e-mail lists and forums, and chat rooms. But I stopped using it for e-mail after I got DSL Internet service from a different company. / 2004/03/01. I cancelled my old UltraNet/RCN Internet service. E-mail Duplication
One annoying E-mail Problem is E-mail Duplication. This is when somebody sends one message to you, but 2 or more copies of it appear in your mailbox. This has happened to me many times. Sometimes I've found dozens of duplicates in my received-mail folders, for reasons unknown. The problem seemed worse with e-mail from e-mail lists and forums. Other people in those groups reported receiving duplicate messages also.
Most of the duplicate e-mail that I have received seemed to originate outside my computer. But a few times it seemed to involve mysterious malfunctions of my e-mail software, Eudora. Here are a couple of those.
- On 2004/12/21, after using it since 1997/07/14, my e-mail client Eudora Pro v3.0 began crashing every time I tried to check my e-mail. It acted as if one particular message in my mailbox on the e-mail server at my ISP, EarthLink, was triggering the crash.
Each time it crashed, there were more copies of the same messages in my In mail folder. I was not able to fix the problem with that version.
On 2004/12/27 I upgraded to Eudora v6.2. That newer version was able to download the problem message without crashing. The duplicate messages stopped also.
- On 2005/08/13 my Eudora v6.2 e-mail software began sending multiple copies of some of my messages.
The duplicates were easy to spot in In folders sorted by Date and time, because each message in a set of duplicates had the exact same date and time, to the second. The messages themselves might arrive seconds or days apart.
This problem seemed to be associated with messages that I wrote on my laptop computer, rather than my desktop computer, though I was using the same e-mail software on both. And they were all messags from one particular night. It didn't happen to messages before or after.
I am appending the expanded e-mail headers from the first 6 copies of one of the duplicate messages. They show that the messages were sent at different times.
There were 4 messages that were being resent, every time I used my e-mail software on my laptop computer, whether or not I actually tried to send or receive from that computer. These were all the messages that I wrote on my laptop while I was working an overnight shift as a security guard.
Here is a summary of those messages, taken from my In folder message list. Of each of these messages, I received 11 or 12 duplicate copies, not shown here.

Roscoe 07:22 AM 8/13/2005 12 UMP termination consequences on FEC reportingI received the first copies of these messages on 2005/08/13. I received the last copies of these messages on 2005/08/27, which was when I moved these messages from the Out folder to an ordinary folder. The Out folder is where Eudora's outgoing messages normally reside. An attribute of each message in the Out folder indicates whether or not the message has been sent yet.
[ I had some difficulty testing whether moving these message would solve the problem. The first time I tried Eudora on my laptop after this, it crashed. Twice after that I had problems copying the Eurora files between my desktop and my laptop. Eventually I succeeded in copying the files, everything seemed to work, and the duplicate messages had stopped. ]I don't know what caused these messages to duplicate. It might be related to some other Computer Problems that I had on 2005/08/13, or maybe that's only what I am supposed to think. In any case, after returning home from work that morning and connecting my laptop computer Roscoe08 to my local area network, it displayed a message saying that there was an IP Address conflict with my other computer, my desktop Roscoe07. I received some other unusual error messages, and Internet access was very slow on both systems. There was a lot of Web Page Pausing. The duplicate messages began appearing that day.
The expanded message headers below are from the first 6 copies of one of the duplicating messages. They are listed in the order of the times in the Received headers. The Received headers show that the later copies were transfered days after the time in the Date header, which are all the same. The headers in the other copies were very similar. For privacy, I deleted all e-mail addresses except my own.

E-mail Hiding
E-mail Hiding is putting an e-mail message in a place where it will probably not be seen and read by its recipient. There are various ways to put e-mail in strange places. One subtle way to do it that happened to me was to give to messages an old Date header value. The Date header is the header at the beginning of every message that records a date and time-of-day of the message.
The order of messages in many people's In folder is not necessarilly the order in which the messages were received, because many people's e-mail In folders are sorted by the Date header. So if a new message arrives with an old Date header value, then it might appear far from the end of the folder, in the middle of many old messages that were read long ago. The message might be so far back that the user would need to scroll up to see it. For practical purposes, this message has been hidden.
There are several ways to cause a message to arrive with an old Date header value. I expeerienced all of these.
- Set back the real-time clock of the sender's computer. This is usually what e-mail software uses for Date header values.
- Delay the arrival of a message until its Date header is old. See E-mail Blocking.
- Disable the updating of the Date header by the sender's e-mail software. Normally when a user writes an e-mail message, the Date header is set to the computer's real-time clock value every time the message is saved. But if this is disabled then the Date header will instead contain the date and time when the message was first created. When a recipient sees it, if it is seen at all. it will already appear to be many hours or days old, depending on how long the sender spent writing it.
E-mail Spoofing
E-mail Spoofing is when somebody sends an e-mail message, but makes it appear to come from somebody else.E-mail Spoofing is done by using false, misleading, or missing values in the message's "From:" header and other headers, and with other techniques. Often the apparent sender is a randomly generated fake name. See the E-mail Spam Burst Of 62 Identical Messages that I received for examples of this.
A spoofed message is nearly alway negative in some way, and sometimes it's sending constitutes a malicious act. E-mail Spoofing can do two things:
- It can make it appear that an innocent person sent the negative e-mail.
- It can hide the identy of the actual sender of the negative e-mail.
Here are some examples of how E-mail Spoofing is used.
- Disguising the sender of E-mail Spam.
- Disguising the sender of E-mail Containing Malware such as computer viruses and worms.
- Damaging the reputation of an innocent person by faking hate mail from that person. For an example of this, see the article about Nawar Shora's experience on the Live Web Page here or the Cached Web Page here.
E-mail Containing Malware
Most e-mail messages contain harmless content such as text, images, and harmless programs. But e-mail can also contain malicious content such as virus and worm programs. Such malicious software is also known as "malware".Malware can do serious damage to a user's computer and files. The amount of damage depends on the particular malware.
A malware program usually appears in the form of a file attached to the e-mail message. To be run, this attachment file must be opened. In some cases this can be done automaticly. In other cases the user must be tricked into opening the attachment file.
Antivirus software can detect most malware when is arrives in an e-mail message, and make it harmless. But it doesn't detect all of it. New or stealty malware can get through and do serious damage. Because of this, E-mail Containing Malware is a useful Harassment tool.
I have received viruses and worms in e-mail. But I haven't actually been infected very often. Maybe this is because I have been using various versions of Eudora as my e-mail software for years, and by default, Eudora will open attachments that might contain viruses only if the user does it manually, and I rarely do that. And more recently, I have been using the Grisoft AVG Free antivirus software also.
Lost E-mail Passwords
Many times my e-mail software came to an abrupt halt while tryinig to check for mail. For some reason, it thought that an e-mail password was no longer valid. It opened a dialog box for me to manually type the password. After I did this, all was fine.In each case, the password hadn't changed. But for some reason, the software thought that it had, and demanded that I manually type the correct new password.
Sometimes the dialog box asking for my e-mail password was not displayed on top. It was under another window, so I couldn't see it. The result was that my incoming e-mail was cut off, sometimes for many hours, until I uncovered and saw that dialog box.
I had several e-mail accounts. I had set my software to automaticly check for mail on each account many times per day. But these password failures destroyed the benefit of the automatic checking by forcing me to manually enter passwords.
Sometimes retyping the password was needed for only a single e-mail account. Sometimes it was needed for multiple accounts. Sometimes it was needed for all of them.
I could find no cause of this problem. Eventually the problem disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared. But it reappears every once in a while.
Outlook Express E-mail Problems
Outlook Express is E-mail Software for Microsoft Windows. I don't use it, but my mother does. And as the family computer expert, I am the person that my mother calls when she has a problem. In 2005 May, my mother tried to send an important e-mail message to some congressmen about the closing of a facility where her brother in law was being treated for Alheimer's Disease. The message could not be sent because of some errors in the e-mail addresses, for example some space characters that shouldn't be there.
But when she tried to fix the errors, she couldn't. She could not put the text cursor at the point of the error. When she clicked the mouse cursor there, an entire e-mail address would be highlighted. When she tried to position the text cursor using the arrow keys, which should have moved the cursor one character for each press, instead the cursor moved an entire word, as if she was holding down the (Ctrl) key, which she wasn't.
The (Ctrl) key was working okay. I asked her to try editing something with the Windows Notepad text editor. In Notepad she was able to position the text cursor without difficulty.
I spent several hours on the telephone with my mother, over several days, trying to find a cause of this problem and fix it. We couldn't. But one evening I received the following e-mail:
Hi Dave, Just wanted you to know that my mission has been accomplished! Don't know exactly what happened but suddenly everything was working the way it should. Not at first- after about five minutes. Thanks for all your time. I think I did learn a little more about my machine. Love you MomAs often happens in my life, this problem disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared.
Unsendable E-mail
Unsendable e-mail is e-mail that your e-mail software refuses to send.
E-mail unsendable because of bad addresses
Most e-mail software will not send a message if its recipient list contains an address in an illegal form.
- My mother was unable to send an important e-mail message because an Outlook Express E-mail Problem made it impossible to edit an invalid recipient e-mail address.
- Many times my E-mail Software reported that is was unable to send a message because a recipient address was invalid. But in most of these cases, the address was perfectly fine, for example an address of a friend of mine which I had used many times before. Also the problem did not seem to be caused by invisible illegal characters in the address field. The message could not be sent unless that address was removed from the recipient list.
E-mail unsendable because of unknown problems
Many times when I've had problems sending e-mail messages, it seemed that the problem was related to the message content, at least at first. But often I was not`able to isolate the trouble-causing content. For example:
- Sometimes I've tried to reply to a message that somebody sent me. I gave the Reply command, and added my reply text to the quoted message to which I was replying. But when I tried to send it, the E-mail Software reported that the message could not be sent.
It appeared that the e-mail software was reacting to something in the quoted text, so I tried to isolate it. Sometimes I was able, but sometimes I was not, Sometimes if I excluded all the quoted text then the message could be sent. Sometimes nothing worked and I gave up and didn't send the message.
- In Eudora E-mail Failure 2005/06/10 I describe how on 2005/06/10 I wrote a message containing a reference to a Web article to a friend whose child suffers from autism. The article was about the causes of autism. When I tried to send it, it wouldn't send. Eventually my E-mail Software failed completely. I had no e-mail for 4 days.
Eudora E-mail Failure 2005/06/10
On 2005/06/10, Eudora failed to save a message that I was writing. It seemed to be another example of Unsendable E-mail. But I really wanted to send the message, so I kept trying to saend it and to figure out why it wouldn't go. But within an hour Eudora was totally useless, and I didn't get it fixed until 4 days later. The message was a link to the Live Web Page here of an article titled "The Age of Autism: One in 15,000 Amish" about how the Amish, who don't vaccinate their children, have virtually no autism.
At first I thought that something in the Subject header was causing a problem, because if I created a message with the same body but without the Subject header, I could save it. When I added the Subject information, I could no longer save. But I next discovered that if I added a different Subject, any Subject, then it no longer saved.
I tried deleting parts of the body and saving. But I wasn't able to do that either.
At one point, the program displayed a message:
EUDORA EUDORA has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. ...After Eudora closed, I restarted it. When I did, I got the same error. I tried 10 times and received the same error each time. The program had become useless.I hoped that the problem might simply go away, as many of my computer problems seem to do eventually. But the problem continued the next morning.
I noticed that there was at least one other message being displayed. But I couldn't read them because they were being covered up by the message about needing to close. I used my camcorder to record my computer's display while the error messages were being displayed. I played back the sequence and paused the tape to read 2 other messages. One was:

Eventually I found an article titled "How To Fix a Corrupted Eudora Mailbox" at the Live Web Page at here. Using information in it, I rebuilt the contents of the Eudora Out mailbox folder. After that Eudora worked okay again, and I was able to send the message with the link to the article about Amish autism.[Click on (Back) button now.]
