Personal Notes

[previously titled "Event Log"]

This page contains some of my personal notes. Because of my situation, most of these notes document problems that were probably the result of intentional harassment.

This file serves 2 purposes:

Because much of it is plain text, it has a different appearance than most of the other parts of my Web site.

I created this page in 2004 April after realizing that my notes were accumulating extensive documentation of examples of what appeared to be the intentional creation of Bad Fortune type harassment. I thought that these notes might be useful to others. Over time I plan to make more of those notes presentable and move them to this page.

Suspicious Problems

A "problem" is something that you don't usually want to have. Some examples are:

We would like to think that our problems can be limited in number and severity by being careful and planning ahead. If all problems were unintentional, then this might be true.

But some problems are intentional. They are the Bad Fortune resulting from a Harassment program run by others. One should be suspicious of a problem if:

Here are only a few of the Suspicious Problems that have happened to me.

Unwanted Telephone Calls

One of the Suspicious Problems that I have is a lot of Unwanted Telephone Calls. They include:

Many people get these calls. What makes mine suspicious are:

I began recording information about these calls in late 2003, after noticing that I seemed to be receiving many telemarketing calls.

Here is that record.

* UnwantedTelephoneCallEventDx.
  * Notes:
    * A telemarketing call is any call, from a machine or a person,
      trying to sell me something or take a survey.
    * Wrong numbers include:
      * Calls meant for another number.
      * Most are calls to my home,
        but a few are calls to people with whom I am visiting,
        which interrupt the visit.
      * Calls not for me recorded on my answering machine.
      * Until 2005/01/22, calls which are silent after being answered,
    * Silent calls, starting 2005/01/22.
      These are calls which are silent after being answered,
  * For a long time with many of the wrong numbers
    the caller acted as if the call was intended for a medical office
    with a telephone number that differs from mine in only 1 digit.
    But later this was no longer true. Apparently it was only a cover.

  * ---DATE---   CALLS ("t" = telemarketing calls, "w" = wrong numbers)

      It is difficult to believe that they would continue to call me

      a telemarketing message was being recorded.
      When I played it, it was a partial, tail end of a message.
      It talked of pressing keys, as if it was voice mail,
      one of the options was for removal from the call list.
      But there was no number to call.

Malicious Software Problems

Malicious Software is any software that somehow gets into your computer and does something that you don't want. It can include:

The following notes show that I had no serious Suspicious Problems with malicious software until 2004/06, when I had a big one.

* MaliciousSoftwareSummaryDx Begin.

  * 1997 - present.  Roscoed7.  No infections.
    * I used Eudora for e-mail, which does not automaticly open attachments,
      and I never opened executable ones.
    * In the last few years I ran AVG.
      It found infected e-mail attachments, but I did not opened them.

  * 2004/03/12 through 2004/06/06.  Roscoe07.  No infections.
    * I used Eudora for e-mail, which does not automaticly open attachments,
      and I never opened executable ones.
    * Computer was behind at least 1 firewall.
      * A Netgear router firewall, always.
      * Also, after a couple of days, the Windows XP firewall.

  +!2004/06/07-21. Roscoe07. Multiple infections, difficult recovery.
    *!Summary for this period.
      *!Multiple Malicious Software infections in Roscoe07
        immediately after an EarthLink DSL Internet service "upgrade".
      *!Files were found with the following new infections:
        * I-Worm/Sasser.B (many)
        * Worm/Padobot.E
        * Worm/Padobot.H (multiple)
        * Worm/Lovsan.A (part of msblast.exe)
        * Dropper.Small.5.D (multiple, including notepad.exe)
      *!Annoying popups begin appearing.
      *!There are many strange error and warning messages,
        and software malfunctions.
        Some are similar to one I received before the infection,
        so they might not be related and the infection is only a cover.
      *!New files that I had not installd appeared on the hard disk,
        though AVG antivirus software reports no viruses.
      *!The AVG rescue floppy disk will not work because WindowsXP was using
        poorly documented NTFS on the hard disk,
        so it could not be accessed unless WindowsXP is running,
        but this means the viruses are running also.
        According the Live Web Page here,
        this is a problem with the rescue disks of most antivirus software.
      +!I try repairing WindowsXP from the its installation CD. It fails.
      *!I use the system for a while.
        Most of it seems to be working except for Notepad
        and the annoying popups that appear in burst every once in a while.
      *!Eventually I decide to disinfect the system by
        reformatting my hard drive and reloading all the software.

Wrist Watch Problems

There was a time when my wrist watches lasted for many years. An early digital watch that I owned worked well for 7 years, except that it's display light was very dim in the last few years, I guess because of a weak battery.

But lately my watches often work poorly, and don't last nearly as long. They typically die weird deaths after only a few months.

Here are my notes about this:

* WristWatchEventDx Begin. (also includes pocket watches).
  The first 2 watches listed below worked reasonably well.
  After that their performances and lifetimes decreased dramaticly.

+ CasioWristWatchDx. Begin. * ?. Purchased. * 1997/07. The plastic band on my second Casio wrist watch broke. I carried it in my pocket for a while, but eventually retired it. * 2002/10/06. It continues to run. Changes modes. Beeps during change. + CasioWristWatchDx. End. + AqualiteWristWatchDx. Begin. * 1997/07/26. * Purchased for $12.99 at Bradlees. *!Some of the buttons were difficult to push at first. They eventually loosened. *!It's harder to control than pervious one. The user interface is more difficult. * This one has a better back light. *!I seemed to have misplaced the documentation sheet. *!2000/03/01. It has a bug. Yesterday the date was 2/29, and the watch showed it correctly. Today the date was 3/01, but the watch shows 3/02! *!2002/10/06. The display was mostly blank. Only the days of the week showed. *!Retired. It lasted 5 years. Not bad. + AqualiteWristWatchDx. End. + AquatechWristWatch1Dx Begin. * This is the first in a series of virtually identical watches. * The labels say: AQUATECH SPORT WATCH, FEATURING, NIGHT LIGHT, ALARM, STOPWATCH, WATER RESISTANT 50M/165FT, 2 YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY. + AquatechWristWatch1Dx Event. / 2002/04/??. * Purchased an Aquatech for 4.63$. * I purchased this model because it had large buttons, and I had found smaller buttons on other watches to be painful to push. * This watch worked fine at first. *!2002/05/02. I noticed that the beep used for the hourly chime had stopped working. The alarm continued to work, though sometimes it sounded poor. *!The beep used for the hourly chime and alarm came and went. *!2003/09/17. I was able to purchase what appears to be an exact copy of AquatechWristWatch1. * Tested alarm, hourly chime, all buttons, light. These were okay. *!Chime and alarm cracks between two pitches in the first beep. Is sounds okay in later beeps. +!2003/12/03. *!After returning from FreedomForum field trip to Concord, the display was blank. I fiddled with some buttons, and display came back, though the contrast was a little low at first. *!The next morning, it's alarm sounded 51m late, I noticed that it was behind by 51 minutes. It might have been paused while blank the night before. +!2004/01/01. The beep pitch crack in the first beep continues. +!2004/02/10. *!The beeps during StopWatch function button presses failed. It was either completely silent, or barely a click. These beeps worked later for a while, but failed again later. *!The alarm beep also failed, repeatedly. +!2004/02/11. + Beep worked for a few seconds after I finished jogging, but stopped immediately afterward. + 22:20. While alarm was sounding, it began missing beeps. the beeps were broken. I heard only partial beeps. some beeps were missing completely. +!15:05. I found 2 of the same model, but the displays of both were blank. I showed them to the attendant. She said that the batteries were dead, which was strange because the store received them both recently. I asked whether there any others out back but she said no. I examined 3x7x7 or 147 watches total, most, if not all, at $6.43. The 2 of the model that I wanted were the only ones not running. Assuming that the probability of exactly 2 watches were defective is 1/1, the probability of those 2 being the model that I want are: (2/147)*((2-1)/(147-1)) = (2/147)*(1/146) = 2/21462 = 1/10731. *!The time and date needed to be set. Display Update Problem

This is a Computer Problem in which windows on the computer display are not updated correctly. This can make using the computer difficult because one can not learn what a computer program is doing by looking at the display.

      * Previously it displayed only the correct location.
      * If the file had been changed then
        there was often pause before the change appeared.

Browser Width Overflow

This is Computer Problem in which a Web Browser formats a page wider than the browser window, often unnecessarilly.

This creates a Scrolling Problem. The user must scroll the page horizontally to view the entire page width. If text lines in the page are wider than the window, then the user must scroll left and right for every line. This is very time consuming and annoying.

Widening the browser window, for example by maximizing it, does not always solve this problem. It also creates the appearance of a badly designed Web Page.

Here are my notes about this:

* BrowserWidthOverflowDx.  Begin.
  *!Many earlier incidents not listed here.
  +!2004/03/13.
    +!NetscapeNavigator would not fit Netgear documentation CD index.htm page
      horizontally regardless of width of window.
      InternetExplorer worked fine.
  +!2004/03/14.
    +!Happened again, on the page http://irda.softwarediamonds.com/ .
  +!2004/03/15.
    +!Happened again, this time with InternetExplorer, on
      http://www.ethereal.com/introduction.html#features
  +!2004/03/27.
    +!MicrosoftManagementConsole Help for "Shared Folders overview".
      Horizontal scroll bar would not disappear, no matter how wide the window.
      There was nothing visible on the page to account for
      the large width and the need for the scroll bar.
  +!2004/07/19.
    +!The page at http://www.cafrman.com/Articles/Art-MA-S1.htm
      displayed okay, but when I tried printing it to show somebody else
      later during a meeting, it wouldn't fit on the width of the page.
      There were no wide images on the page to account for this.
      I needed to print again using Landscape mode instead of Portrait mode.
      That worked, but was wasteful of paper.

Windows Help Problems

A Windows Help Problem is a Computer Problem with a multiplier effect, because it can amplify other problems. Windows Help systems are useful for at least 2 things:

But if your Help system is not working correctly, then you might not be able to do these things.

I have had help system problems on 3 different Computers That I Use: Roscoed7, Roscoe07, and My Parents' Computer.

[2004/08/10 updated] Here is summary of problems with the Windows XP Help and Support Center that I describe in the notes that follow:

Here are my notes about this:

+!WindowsHelpEventDx.  Begin.

  *!1996+. Windows95 Help was crippled on Roscoed7d computer.
    *!The Windows Help system became disabled early in it's life.
      According to my recollection,
      the search index needed to be rebuilt repeatly,
      though it is only supposed to be built once,
      the first time the Search command is used.
    *!One day, the Search function stopped working completely,
      because the Search index could not be rebuilt.
    *!Reinstalling Windows did fix the problem, but only temporarilly.
      The fix typically lasted a week.

  +!2004/04/08. The Roscoe07d computer WindowsXP Help system became crippled
    It was working okay until I did a Windows reinstall that
    fixed another problem [see Roscoe07dCDOrDVDEvent].
    Summary of crippling of Roscoe07d Help system:

    * The Index button displays a blank index.
    * Many links in the help pages have failed.
      The only ones that seem to be working are
      the small popup rectangles containing black on yellow text.
    * Pages are missing from the Search function.

    Details follow:

    +!2004/04/08.  First discovered crippling.
      * I was finishing a Roscoe07dOSEvent, reinstalling Windows,
        and was trying to install the Windows software updates after
        doing the basic install from the Windows CD.
        I tried to get information about WindowsXP automatic updates
        from the Help and Support Center.
      *!I discovered that the help system had become crippled, as follows:
        *!The "Related Topics" links in help pages no longer worked.
          *!Every page that I tried had this problem. Here are 3:
            . What's new in home networking.
            . To update your system files using Windows Update.
            . To synchronize files on connected computers using Briefcase.
          *!If the page had a Notes section near the end,
            each click on a Related Topics link added
            another checkbox icon in front of the word "Notes".
        *!The Help pages most relevant to a search were either missing,
          or not accessible. I tried doing a search for "Automatic Update",
          but sections that I wanted were not found. [details follow]

    +!2004/04/10.
      * I brought my computer to my parents' home to compare
        my computer with theirs. The 2 computers are:
        * Roscoe07d: [my computer] running "Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition,
          Version 2002, Service Pack 1", 512 MB RAM..
        * ParentSComputer: running "Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition,
          Version 2002" (no service pack), 128 MB RAM.

      /!Missing help search results were confirmed.
        I used Start/(Help and Support) and searched for
        "automatic update" on both.
        *!On Roscoe07d:
          . 9 results found.  [7 were missing]
            . Suggested Topics (4 results). [5 were missing]
              . Pick a task

        *!On ParentSComputer:
          [Note, the 5 topics not in the Roscoe07d lists above
          are marked with "!" bullet in the ParentSComputer lists below.]
          . 16 results found.
            . Suggested Topics (9 results).

                . Error messages
                . Turn off automatic updating of trusted root authority certificates
                . Turn on automatic updating of trusted root authority cert i ficates
            . Microsoft knowledge Base (0 results) (0 results).

      /!"Related Topics" links disabled.
        *!On Roscoe07d:
          *!The "Related Topics" links on all pages that I tried
            failed to display any related topics.
          *!Those on the same page with a "Notes" section cause additional
            checkbox icons to be displayed in front of the word "Notes".
        * On ParentSComputer: Related Topics links worked normally.
          For example, the help page titled:
            "To update your system files using Windows Update"
          displays the following list of related topics:
          * Have Windows remind you about pending updates
          * Keeping Windows up-to-date automaticly
          * Using Windows Update

      /!Other Help Search result relevance was generally poor.
        For example, I searched for "internet" on both.
        Both returned 15 "Suggested Topics" results.
        But there were many results that were different or had low relevance,
        especially Roscoed07d. Here they are from both.
        *!On Roscoe07d:
          . Pick a task
            . Send a photo in e-mail
            . Search the Internet

      I have had things deleted from my Windows XP system
      help screens. I have also had the Accessibility feature
      (the icon with the wheelchair symbol) totally deleted and
      the help referring to it deleted as well.

      These things were present when the machine was new.
      ...

  +!2004/04/12.
    / I had been having problems transfering files between computers
      because of permission problems.
      I did a WindowsHelp Search for "permission" on
      both the Roscoe07d and ParentSComputer.
      *!The one and only result under the "Fix a Problem" result subsection
        in both computers was "Accessing System Restore".
        The word "permission" does not appear in that page.
      /!On Roscoe07d, when I clicked on the first "Glossary" link
        under "Overviews, Articles and Tutorials",
        the following message appeared:
          Internet Explorer Script Error.
              An error has occurred in the script on this page.

            Line: 39
            Char: 6
            Error: Invalid argument
            Code: 0
            URL: ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\glossary.chm::/glossary_per.htm.

              Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
        I answered Yes and a page appeared, showing a "Make Changes" section,
        which did contain the word "permission"s.
        On ParentSComputer this error did not happen.

    +!The Back Button Malfunctioned in WindowsHelp on both computers.
      The back button is apparently going to the top of the previous page,
      not to the previous point in the previous page.
      The Forward button was not working either.
      Both computers behaved the same.

    *!The Help Index is bad.
      *!On Roscoe07d, the Index button does not work at all.
        It displays a blank index.
      *!On ParentSComputer, an index is displayed, but it not very helpful.
        Some links go to nearly useless places.
        For example, in the index under "permissions", there were 7 links.
        Here are 3 of them.
        * "shared folder permisions, defined":
          this appears to point to the correct associated glossary entry.
        * special access permisions, defined:
          At first this pointed to a sectioned titled "Using the WMI Control".
          Later it pointed to what appeared to
          the correct associated glossary entry.
        * "setting for Windows users and groups":
          This also pointed to "Using the WMI Control".
          But this section only mentions setting permissions
          as one of the things that WMI does.
          It was not helpful at all on how to do it.

    *!Other links on Roscoe07d help pages are bad.
      In the Help section titled "Using the WMI control",
      there is a link "Open WMI Control".
      When I clicked on that it did not work.
      It also adds a check box icon in front of the word "Notes"
      at the Notes section, similar to what the "Related Topics" links do.
      This link works okay on ParentSComputer.

  +!2004/04/14.
    * I video recorded the above WindowsXP help problems with my camcorder.

  *!2004/05/23.
    * Help is working okay after installing WindowsXP to the new hard disk
      that replaced the old one after the 80GBHardDiskFailureInRoscoe07d.

  +!2004/05/30.  Problems coming back.
    +!There was a 5 to 10 second delay, with a blank white windows area,
      when I used Help to search for "delayed write",
      following by another delay during the actual search.
      This was not the first search that I have done since reinstalling.
    +!The only results were in the MicrosoftKnowledgeBase,
      and most of those seemed to be about Windows2000.
    +!I tried searching for "safely remove hardware" and again got
      no local results.
    +!In the KnowledgeBase results I clicked on "Windows XP Support Center".
      +!In that page, (Ctrl F) for searching the page, did not work.
      +!I read the entire page, and there was no mention of
        "safely remove hardware".

    +!2004/06/09.  Broken link.
      +!In the page titled: "Repair overview"
        in the section titled: "Your personal data files are missing or
          have been corrupted,
          or you want to revert to a previous version of a file."
        I clicked on the link "Backing up files and folders."
        and the following was displayed:
          This information is not available

          The information you are trying to locate
          is not available in this version of Windows.

    [2004/08/10 updated]
    +!2004/08/10. Index and Search results incomplete.
      /!I began using the (Help and Support Center) page titled
        "Printing Troubleshooter" after a printer test page misprinted.
      * I was reading a Help page titled:
          "To delete and reinstall your printer and printer driver".
      *!I closed some windows, including the Help window,
        because the delete of the printer failed.
        After that the printer deleted okay.
        But I could not get back to the page the same way,
        because the printer from which I printed the test page was gone.
      +!So I tried to find the page again in Windows Help.
        I could not.
        +!"To delete and reinstall your printer and printer driver"
          was not in the help Index, under either:
          * "To" or under
          * "delete".
        +!I tried doing a Search for it using the following terms:
          "printer driver"
          "driver"
          "delete"
          "troubleshooting"
          "troubleshooter"
          The page did not show up.
        +!I tried doing a Search for the page titled: "Printing Troubleshooter"
          using the following terms:
          "Printing Troubleshooter"
          "printing"
          "troubleshooter"
          The page did not show up.
        +!I began reading the page "Printer drivers overview".
          + Related topic: "Printer drivers overview".
            + "To connect directly to a Plug and Play printer".
              /!I tried turning printer off and on.
                It was not detected as new hardware.
              /!I tried PrintersAndFaxes/File/AddPrinter.
        +!When I clicked on the (Set search options) link,
          and changed (Return up to X results per provider) from 15 to 999,
          then the (Printing Troubleshooter) page was returned in the results
          at the top of the list.

        *!NOTE: the help system was behaving as if the relevance scores
          of the search results were being scrambled,
          at least during selection of a subset of results to display,
          but probably also during the sorting of the results for display.
  +!2005/09/13.
    +!When I was trying to debug new problems with my sound card,
      all icons in WindowsHelp had disappeared.
      They reappeared when I resolved the sound card problem.
  +!2005/11/03
    +!I encountered problems with the Help system in the CCURE software
      which I have been studying while my partner is on tour at work.
      +!in the Glossary, some words are run together,
        as if line terminators were removed.
      +!many help items in the Index opened the wrong page,
        pages that seemed to have nothing to do with the
        title listed in the Index.
  +!2005/12/10
    +!pages in the Microsoft Management Console section about Disk Management
      stopped working.
      it worked again after I closed the Help window
      and opened it again by selecting Help on the right-click menu
      of the disk drive.

+!WindowsHelpEventDx.  End.
